The Happiest Baby on the Block, by Dr. Harvey Karp, is essential to understanding the “fourth trimester” of a baby’s life.  He explains that in order to calm a baby, you have to recreate the environment of the womb with the 5 s’s:

  • Swaddle
  • Shhhhhh noise
  • Side- holding baby on his side
  • Sway
  • Suck on a pacifier


Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Dr. Marc Weissbluth is an excellent resource for understanding sleep.

In a nutshell:

  • Babies should have an early bedtime (like 6pm), and naps at around 9 and 1
  • Look for drowsy signs
  • Babies go down within 1-2 hours of being awake
  • Many behavior problems are caused by over-tiredness


The 90 Minute Sleep Solution, by Dr. Polly Moore saved our nap time!! We had no problems with night-time sleep (using Weissbluth’s methods), but I just couldn’t get the timing right for her naps and they were such a struggle.

In a nutshell:

  • Babies wake cycles are in 90 minute increments.  Either 90 minutes, or when they are ready for longer wake periods, 3 hours (two 90 minute periods)


The Wonder Weeks, by Frans Plooij is an interesting book that explains common baby fussy periods as leaps in mental development, or wonder weeks.  The book goes in depth about the different leaps, and gives ideas for activities the baby might be ready to participate in. There’s also an app, which I recommend because it tracks when your baby is in a wonder week.
